Partnerships Between Public Health and Corrections for Tuberculosis Control
corrections jailGo to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not become infected or diseased with M. tuberculosis. 

It is important to remember the Corrections System does not have a monopoly on TB control within the correctional facilities; there must be a collaborative relationship with local public health officials to ensure the best practices for TB control and prevention are used. Inmates come from the community, corrections employees live in the community, and those employees interact with their own families/friends, as well as the incarcerated population. The actual correctional facility may stand alone, but the dynamics of the human population make it a component of the local health environment that cannot be ignored.

bannerImportance of Collaboration
Tuberculosis control must be a collaborative activity at all levels of the public health and correctional systems. State level health authorities should cultivate a relationship with state level corrections department staff.  The establishment of good working relationships at the higher levels may produce a positive "trickle down" effect, thereby facilitating collaboration at the county/city/local level. Read more >>

Join us for this exciting web-based seminar featuring Stefan Kaufmann, Ph.D. of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology, Berlin. Dr. Kaufmann will discuss new research to identify the molecular defense mechanisms responsible for protection against TB and the implication of research results for the impact of new interventions like TB vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics. John C. Grabau 

John recently retired from the New York State Department of Health where he was principal investigator for the Centers for Disease Control Tuberculosis Cooperative Agreement and Tuberculosis Epidemiologic Studies Consortium. He was also principal investigator for the Office of Refugee Resettlement's Refugee Health Prevention Program. John earned is M.P.H. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. John now calls Florida "home" and the SNTC is fortunate to have him as the newest member of our team.

The SNTC seeks to address the training, education, medical consultation, and technical assistance needs of healthcare providers and TB programs in 11 southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
